Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson

(1921-1996), Chemist

Chemist. Wilkinson studied chemistry at Imperial College London, receiving his PhD in 1946. He was appointed Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Imperial College in 1956. Wilkinson is remembered for his contributions to organometallic chemistry, which is the study of compounds containing a direct metal-to-carbon bond. In 1973 Wilkinson was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry (with Ernst Fischer) for his work on 'sandwich compounds'.
