George Hamilton Seymour

(1797-1880), Diplomat

Sitter in 2 portraits
Spent his whole career in diplomacy. He held posts at Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart, Berlin, Constantinople and Florence before being made an Envoy to the Belgian court in 1835, where he took part in the negotiations by which the independence of Belgium was secured. Seymour moved to Lisbon in 1846 during the period of insurrection there. He is best known for the 'Seymour conversations' with the Russian Tsar in 1853. The Tsar wished to discuss with Britain the question of what to do if the Ottoman Empire should collapse. The conversations were leaked in the St Petersburg Gazette and The Times and led to the British belief that the Tsar was actively plotting the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire.
