Richard Ingrams was educated at Shrewsbury and University College, Oxford. He served his National Service as a private in the Royal Army Service Corps, after which, in 1962, he joined the satirical publication Private Eye. He became editor the following year, a post that he retained until 1986. Ingrams was television critic for the Spectatorand was a long-standing columnist for the Observer (1987-2005) as well as founder and editor of the Oldie from 1992. He has written a number of spin-off books from Private Eye, as well as a biography of Malcolm Muggeridge.
