Brian Hilton Flowers, Baron Flowers

(1924-2010), Physicist

Graduating in physics and electronics from Cambridge, Flowers crossed the Atlantic in September 1944 to join the Anglo-Canadian Atomic Energy Project in Canada. He returned to England in 1946 and began work at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Harwell. In 1958 he returned to academic life at the University of Manchester. At Manchester he took on undergraduate teaching and some of his lectures formed the basis of his book Properties of Matter published in 1970 (with Eric Mendoza). Flowers was a founder member of the Social Democratic Party in 1981. As a life peer he served in spare time as a front bench spokesman on issues relating to science, education, energy and the environment.
