Selected by choreographer Sir Kenneth MacMillan to dance the leading role in his new ballet, The Prince of the Pagodas, Bussell became the Royal Ballet's youngest ever Principal Dancer, aged 20. Her classical repertoire includes Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. After the birth of her second daughter in 2004 she made a triumphant return with the New York City Ballet, resuming her Principal role with the Royal Ballet for the 2005 season. She officially retired as a ballerina in June 2007, and has since created a series of children's books about ballet. She is President of the Royal Academy of Dance and a judge on BBC television programme Strictly Come Dancing.
