Gerald Durrell
(1925-1995), Zoologist and writerSitter in 8 portraits
Gerald Durrell was among the world's most popular naturalists in the 1950s and early 1960s. He travelled to remote places such as Siberia, Cameroon, Tierra del Fuego, and Mauritius in search of rare zoological specimens. He went on to make significant contributions as a conservationist, founding the Jersey Zoological Park in 1959 and the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust in 1964. He published many books, recording his worldwide explorations, observations of the animal world, and life as a naturalist. One of his best-loved books, My Family and Other Animals (1956), is a vivid description of his life as a young boy with his family in Corfu.
