Sir Kazuo Ishiguro
(1954-), NovelistSitter in 5 portraits
Japanese-born, British-writer raised in England from the age of five. After studying creative writing at the University of East Anglia he worked as a community worker in Glasgow before publishing his first novel, A Pale View of Hills (1982), narrated by a Japanese widow living in England. Other works include The Remains of the Day (1989) narrated by an elderly English butler. The book won the Booker Prize and was made into an award-winning film starring Emma Thompson and Sir Anthony Hopkins, with a screenplay by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. Other works include The Unconsoled (1995), When We Were Orphans (2000), Never Let Me Go (2005) and The Buried Giant (2015). He was awarded the Nobel Laureate Prize for Literature in 2017 and received was knighted in 2018.

A small inaccuracy in the capsule bio at the top of this entry: Mr Ishiguro's first novel is entitled 'A Pale View of Hills'
