Judy Cassab was one of Australia's most respected female artists, renowned for her abilities as a portraitist. Born in Vienna, she was raised by her grandparents in Hungary where she began studying painting. Cassab emigrated to Australia in 1951 and quickly gained a reputation for her portrait painting. Since her first solo exhibition at the Macquarie Galleries in Sydney in 1953, Cassab had well over fifty solo exhibitions throughout Australia as well as in Paris and London. She won numerous awards, including the Rubinstein Portrait Prize, and has been three times winner of the prestigious Archibald Prize. Her work is represented in many private and public collections around the world.
