Edna Clarke Hall was a painter, printmaker, illustrator and poet, primarily known for her drawings. She attended the Slade School of Art from 1895-99 where she was a contemporary of Gwen and Augustus John, William Orpen and Ambrose McEvoy. In 1899 she married the barrister William Clarke Hall. She exhibited at the New English Art Club from 1901 and held her first solo exhibition at the Chenil Galleries in 1914. She went on to exhibit at the Redfern Gallery from 1924 until 1941. In the 1920s and 1930s Clarke Hall published several volumes of poetry and made a number of illustrations to Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights. A retrospective exhibition of her drawings was held at Manchester City Art Gallery in 1939.

Edna Waugh (1879-1979) British artist, illustrator and poet born 29 July 1879 in Shipbourne, Kent to parents; Congregational Minister, Benjamin Waugh (1839-1908) and Sarah Elizabeth Boothroyd (1839-1932). She married barrister Sir William Clarke Hall (1867-1932) in 1898. Their sons were Justin James Clarke Hall (1905-1983) and Denis Lucian Clarke Hall (1910-2006). She died at The Great House, Upminster, Essex, England on 16 November 1979 aged 100.
additional information: Edna Waugh studied at the Slade School of Art under the tutelage of Henry Tonks (1862-1937). Her father and husband were founding members of the "National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children". Her father became the NSPCC's first director. Her husband was knighted in the year of his death (1932), she then became Lady Edna Clarke Hall. Her London Studio was bombed in the 1941 blitz and destroyed much of her work.
