Peter Rouw's father was Hendrick (Henry) Rouw - b. abt.1744 (probably in the Netherlands) - d. 1818 Saint Marylebone Westminster, England. He married Elizabeth Clemmes on the 11 Feb 1768. (One of the witnesses on the marriage certificate, Peter Mathias Van Gelder (Gilder) a fellow sculptor of his time). (signature compared to other documents).

They had 6 children
Peter Rouw -1770 - 1852
Theophilus Rouw - 1772 - 1842
Henry Rouw - 1777 - 1855
Sarah Rouw - 1778 - unknown
John Rouw - 1780 - unknown
Caroline Rouw - 1784 - 1785

His sons - Peter, Theophilus and Henry Rouw are all listed as 'stone masons' and'sculptors' in the English Census's.

Their father, Hendrick (Henry) Rouw was described as a 'carver' - UK, Register of Duties Paid for Apprentices' Indentures, 1710-1811 for 'Henry' Rouw and the National archives of England have him as an insured Mason, at 35 Norton Street Marylebone England on the 9th Jan 1788,
at 35 Norton Street Marylebone England.

The Peter 'junior', '2nd' or 'the younger', may have derived from Peter Rouw's uncle Peter Rouw (1754 - 1808), who was also a 'sculptor', giving an identification to both their works.

DNA to these lines has also confirmed these links.

Kind regards
Caroline (5th great-granddaughter to Hendrick Rouw and 4th granddaughter to Theophilus Rouw).

I now have a newspaper clipping confirming Louisa Rouw (1804-1864), is the daughter of Theophilus Rouw - Sculptor. She married John James 1856. Her death 3 APR 1864 • 9 Woodfield-terrace Harrow Road, Middlesex England. She would therefore be the niece of Peter Rouw. Also confirming she is the sister of Sarah Farrow nee Rouw (1806-1884) and Theodore Henry Rouw (1802-1857) marble carver.

I believe Wendy McGregor's information of Peter Rouw's parents also to be correct. After further searching I also believe the Peter Rouw Snr concept developed out of websites and again like Wendy believe Peter the Elder to be a relative or perhaps the father of Hendrick. There is a notation of a Death1807 • LONDON ENGLAND 'Rouw was a sculptor and wax modeller who worked in a similar style to his son Peter Rouw II. Literary References: Gunnis 1968, 332; Pyke 1973, 123' - Again, I think it more an assumption that the noted to be father and son due to skills and name only. All other historical documents such as marriage certificates and birth certificates seem to indicate otherwise.
DNA tests have proved my connection, which above all else mean the lineage is correct. It is now a case of putting all the factual documentation (that is still coming to light) into its correct order and piece together the correct relationships.
Kind regards
Caroline Farrow.

Hi, I have also been researching the Rouw family of London, my connection is through my 4x ggrandfather Theophilus Rouw. Caroline Farrow has put up great info already, in my research I believe that as well as the siblings Peter, Theophilus and Henry there were also Mary-Ann, Sarah, John and Caroline but as no other information comes to light it seems they may have all passed away as infants. Baptism records all show the parents were Hendrick (Henry) and Elizabeth Rouw, Peter's 3rd marriage has his father as Henry Rouw. Hendrick Rouw married Elizabeth Clemmes on 11th February 1768 at St Mary-St Marylebone Road. It would be great to know how the Peter Elder and Younger/Junior information developed as this is on all the websites, I have speculated that Hendrick's father or relative may have been a Peter. Peter was buried on 16th Dec 1852 at St Mary's Islington, his brothers Theophilus (19 Oct 1842) and Henry (13 Jun 1855) are buried in the same grave at Kensal Green Cemetery - this information came to me via another relative's quest. Theophilus had a son Theodore Henry Rouw who in 1851 census is noted as a Marble Carver and was also buried at Kensal Green Cemetery.
We are trying to locate the 3 family portraits (in oil colour by G.F. Joseph) as noted in Peter's will and left to his grandson William - one of Peter, his first wife Ann and one of his son Theodore GFY as a boy. If someone knows where they are or may have images of them it would be so gratefully appreciated if they could send copies to this gallery.
Appreciate any help we can get to solve the disappearance of the paintings, thank you for your time taken to read my message
Kind regards
Wendy McGregor
