My parents had a portrait of Maria by William Wontner, inherited from my father’s uncle, which was stolen off their wall in Johannesburg, South Africa. The police concluded it was an inside job, either the gardener or cook, but there has been no trace of the painting since, and they both deny it. I am a writer and have a curiosity about the painter’s personal life. Is there anything further written about him? Thanks so much. Best Elizabeth Berman

William Clark Wontner was married to my aunt Jessie Keene, daughter of Anne Keene (née Edwards) who was a popular model to Burne-Jones and other artists of the time after marrying Charles Keene. Wontner was an accomplished portrait artist, but went out of fashion in later life, and died in poverty. My aunt out lived him, dying a few years after my birth in 1935. I have 4 of his works, none signed. One Taigi as “the tennis girl” His wife Jessie, unfinished portrait of my mother and a old priest. Anne Wall.
