Louis Gabriel Blanchet was a French painter. In 1727, he won the prestigious Prix de Rome competition; this success enabled him to set up a portrait practice in Rome, where he was encouraged by the patronage of the Duc de Saint-Aignan, French ambassador to the Holy See. He spent many years as a close rival to Pompeo Batoni, each trying to outdo the other in their depictions of European royalty and aristocracy.
