Dennis Gath
(1930-2005), Psychiatrist and university teacher of psychiatrySitter in 1 portrait
Psychiatry has always been the Cinderella specialty, whether for esteem, funding, or ideas for research. At Oxford, besides having a heavy load of patient care and teaching, Dennis Gath has helped to change all this. Introducing standardised methods to give his research more rigour, he has shown that depression affects up to half of all women soon after childbirth and why the rapid running down of our mental hospitals in favour of community care should be reconsidered.
