A family doctor in Oxfordshire, Irvine Loudon did much to raise standards in general practice, particularly through the Royal College of General Practitioners, and then retired early in his 50s to take up an academic post in medical history. His subsequent books on the evolution of the general practitioner and death in childbirth have been acclaimed world wide, and he worked on an illustrated history of medicine and another volume of general practice.
