Her career began at the National Youth Theatre and she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1968. Notable roles on the stage have included Lady Macbeth in 1974, Cleopatra in 1983 and Natalya Petrovna in A Month in the Country in 1994. Her film work includes performances in Peter Greenaway's The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1989), Robert Altman's Gosford Park (2001) and The Queen (2006), for which she won an Oscar. She was made a Dame of the British Empire in 2003.
