Delia Smith left school at sixteen and worked in a variety of jobs before pursuing a career in cookery. She worked in a small restaurant, The Singing Chef, and at the same time studied cookery books at the British Museum, which inspired her to try out recipes when cooking for family and friends. In 1969, Smith became cookery writer on the Mirror and later wrote for the Evening Standard. Her first television appearances came in the early 1970s, as resident cook on the BBC's regional magazine programme Look East. Smith came to prominence by hosting a cookery television show Family Fare. Her Cookery Course series and book was an instant success.
