London-born Robert Whitaker spent four years working in television and photography in Melbourne from 1961. There he was involved in the art scene until he was recruited by the Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein, during their first tour of Australia in 1964, and brought back to London. From 1968 Whitaker worked as a photographer for Time and Life magazines, documenting the Florence flood, the Indo-Pakistan war and the wars in Vietnam and Cambodia, where he narrowly escaped death. He has photographed Peggy Guggenheim, Max Ernst, Salvador Dali and other artists. After a long period as a farmer in West Sussex he returned to photography in the 1990s.
