Born into a theatrical family, Kate Bateman was an American actress who began appearing on stage at the age of five. In 1849 she and her sister Ellen, were spotted by the famous showman P.T. Barnum. He paid them to appear at his theatre and sponsored their tour of Britain in which they starred as The Bateman Children. From her teens, Bateman started performing in leading Shakespearean and romantic roles in America. She regularly travelled back to London, performing with Henry Irving at the Lyceum and at the Sadler's Wells Theatre.
