Lady Hester Pinney's family were benefactors to the (now defunct) Beaminster & Netherbury Grammar School, possibly she was a governor of the school too, though I am not certain about that. She had an interest in Art and presented 'Lady Pinneey's Art Prize' every year at school prizegiving. The competition was open to the entire school with a set subject each year and she chose the winner. I was the last person to win the prize before her death in 1958 with a painting of 'An English Country Garden'. There was a large entry, and I was in the lowest form in the school, so it was rather a surprise for me. She gave me a water colour box with 24 half pans which I still have, half a dozen sable brushes and a pad of heavy water colour paper. She asked me to see her after the presentation when she told me 'Watercolours is one area where Englishmen can excel in Art, so I do hope you will take it up and really develop your talent'. This led to me going to Art School and focusing mostly on watercolours. (see https://chezwatts.gallery )
