Hastings won acclaim when his first play Don't Destroy Me (1956) was performed at the New Lindsey Club whilst still a teenager. Other plays include The World's Baby (1962) and Lee Harvey Oswald (1966). Also a writer of novels, non-fiction, poetry and screenplays including the Oscar nominated Tom & Viv (1994).
