He was also visiting lecturer in music to the then King Alfred's Teacher Training College. He often bought a round for his students in The Vine close to the cathedral!

The Christmas Carol CD comprising music from Winchester Cathedral (1972) directed by Alwyn Surplice - presumably originally available on LP - is HALLMARK 707492, but today this CD appears to be unavailable for new purchase.

Reginald Alwyn Surplice was Director of Music at Winchester Cathedral between 1949 and 1972. He Directed the said choir on a 1972 recording of Traditional Christmas Carols, later released as a CD. His name can be found as a Director in at least one other recording.

Alwyn Surplice was organist and choirmaster at Winchester Cathedral for a period during the second half of the twentieth century.

In addition to the earlier information submitted on 14 September 2016, the date of the portrait, at a young age, in 1932 suggests that it was probably taken at the time of his appointment as Sub-Organist of St George's Chapel, Windsor.

He was successively Assistant Organist, 1927 to 1932, then Sub-Organist, 1932 to 1945 of St George's Chapel, Windsor (including war service in the Royal Air Force), Organist of Bristol Cathedral, 1945 to 1949 and Organist of Winchester Cathedral, 1949 to 1972.

He studied with Gustav Holst at Reading University and held the degree of Bachelor of Music (Durham). In 1971 he was awarded the Canterbury degree of Doctor of Music. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and a tutor in organ at the Royal Academy of Music.
