Dear Charlie,
I am researching my grandfather, Capt John Alexander Davidson, M.C. who was in the 350th Electrical &Mechanical Company, Royal Engineers in WW1. This company was attached to the First Army and the CRE First Army was Edwin Henry de Vere Atkinson. The editor of the Great War forum, Chris Baker, wrote on the forum that Atkinson seems quite an interesting figure: an academic regular engineer (fairly common at the time) who was happily running a technical college in India when the war started; commander of engineers in a TF division, then I Corps, then First Army. Finished his career with a knighthood and a series of senior staff roles in India.

Horne respected him and seemed to support him."
Do you have any information on his WW1 career such as a diary?
I am visiting the Royal Engineers library at Chatham on 1 Nov.
Kind regards,
Chris Davidson,

Sir Edwin is my great grandfather. We have his family history and lots of pictures. His portrait also hangs in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Roorkee as he was Director there when it was the Thomason College of Civil Engineering, the first college to educate both Indians and Europeans. You probably have all of this information, but if you want more, please get in touch.

Charlie, above is my son, and Sir Edwin is my Grandfather. We have a large number of photographs of his time at Roorkee and other places in India. He played an important part in the 1st WW and was recognised as a first rate planner and organiser. I have his medals including two Croix de Guerres. He died when I was 4 yrs old. He had a brother who served in the 1st WW.
