Sir William Tennant Gairdner KCB FRS (1824-1907) was Professor of Medicine at the University of Glasgow from 1862 until 1900. He was a fabled teacher, and his career was remarkable in combining University and Hospital work with a Public Health appointment in which he greatly reduced the incidence of cholera in Glasgow by reducing overcrowding in tenements. He was Physician to Queen Victoria and then to Edward VII.
