Sophia Gray, nee Wharton Myddleton, was the wife of the first Bishop of Cape Town. Her husband, Robert Gray, described her as the 'architect to the diocese' because of her not inconsiderable contribution to the building of in the region of 40 Gothic Revival churches across the diocese, between 1848 and her death in 1871.
Her father was Robert Wharton Myddleton, and she was born in Easington in the North Riding.
