Born in Fife, Mach settled in London following postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Art (1979-82). His first solo show was held at the Lisson Gallery in 1982 and the following year he showed Polaris, a replica submarine made of 6000 tyres, at the Hayward Gallery. Multiple mass-produced objects, have been used by Mach throughout his career and collage has become a second strand to his practice. Mach was elected an RA in 1998 and in 2000 was appointed Professor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools. '
