Born Er-hong Chang in Yibin, China. In her youth Jung Chang worked as a 'barefoot doctor', a steelworker, and an electrician before becoming an English language student and assistant lecturer at Sichuan University. In 1978 she moved to England, obtaining a PhD in Linguistics from York University in 1982. She was the first person from Communist China to receive a doctorate from a British institution. Her book Wild Swans - Three daughters of China (1992) tells the story of three generations of Chang's family, and since its publication it has sold over ten million copies. Another biography Mao: The Unknown Story was published in June 2005.
