Industrial designer and inventor of the bagless vacuum cleaner, Dyson began working on his design in 1978, selling the first models in Japan in 1991, and opening a research centre and factory in Wiltshire in 1993. Other inventions include a bladeless fan, and an ultra-efficient hand dryer. The James Dyson Foundation encourages young people to consider engineering as a career, and the annual James Dyson award recognises young inventors.
