Playwright, novelist and screenwriter. British-born Kureishi rose to prominence with the enormous success of My Beautiful Laundrette (1986) for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay and won the New York Critics' Best Screenplay Award (1987). Sammy and Rosie Get Laid followed (1988) and his novel, The Buddha of Suburbia (1990) was later adapted for television. Kureishi's writing has often focused on sub-cultures within British society, highlighting, sometimes controversial issues surrounding race, class and sexuality and exploring topical themes such as identity and integration.
