Joseph Hanson was known as 'the weaver's friend'. As a merchant-manufacturer of checks and cotton goods in Manchester he was among the first Radicals to stand up for the rights of the cloth workers. This lead to his imprisonment and premature death in 1811. His residence was Strangeways Hall, Manchester. Joseph Hanson's biography has recently been fully updated on the online Dictionary of National Biography by Dr Katrna Navickas who should be credited with this informaton about Joseph Hanson.
