Arthur Wesley Wheen

(1897-1971), Translator

Australian-born translator and librarian. During World War One Wheen fought with the Australian Imperial Force for which he was awarded the Military Medal and two bars. In 1920 he moved to England to study at Oxford on a Rhodes scholarship and subsequently joined the V&A where he became Keeper of the Library (1939-62). A gifted linguist, Wheen translated a number of German literary works including Erich Maria Remarque's Im Westen nichts Neues, (All Quiet on the Western Front, 1929). His social circle included T.S. Eliot and Herbert Read.
