Patricia Simpson

, Geneticist

Sitter in 1 portrait
Simpson is a biologist who has extensively researched the development and evolution of insects. Through studying the sensory bristles on fruit flies, she discovered that pattern formation and growth are controlled by the same mechanism. Her findings about the behavior of cells and particularly the occurrence of 'lateral inhibition' have been significant for understanding human development and disease. In 2000 she was elected Fellow of the Royal Society and in 2016 awarded an Honorary Fellowship from Newnham College, Cambridge. Simpson is currently an Emeritus Professor of the Department of Zoology at Cambridge University.
