At the time these photographs were taken Richard Hope was Headmaster of The Oratory School, Caversham Park near Reading (between 1934 and 1938). He was Section Director of the Ministry of Information during the Second World War, and worked in the Commonwealth Relations Office between 1946 and 1963 (for much of that time in Quebec, Canada). He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) on his retirement. He died in 1964 (aged 62).
