This is not of John Shakespear (1774 - 1858), Orientalist. It is of John Shakespear of Brookwood (1749 - 1825) Chief of the Council at Dacca 1779. Friend of William Makepeace Thackeray and Warren Hastings.

The print is of John Shakespear (1749/1825) son of John Shakespear, Alderman of London (1718/1775). son of Jonathan Shakespear (1672/1735), son of John Shakespear of Sadwell.
I inherited an oil painting of him in the same pose and dress of the print. At the age of 18 he joined the United East India Company. His father and Uncle Colin Currie posted the required bond. After 18 years of a successful career he returned to England wealthy enough to marry. In 1782 he married Mary Davenport (1757/1793) grandaughter of Sir John Ivory Talbot of Laycock Abbey. She could trace her ancestry to Henry III. In 1784 he purchased Brookwood House in Hampshire and thereafter was known as John Shakespear of Brookwood to differenciate him from the numerous Johns in the Shakespear family.
