Dame Doris Winifred Beale

(1889-1971), Matron-in-Chief of Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service

Beale was a military nurse and administrator who served as Matron-in-Chief of Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service during the Second World War. After nursing at the Royal Naval Hospital in Gibraltar, Beale was admitted as a member of the College of Nursing. From 1930-1933, she managed the Cadet Sick Quarters at Dartmouth and then became Superintending Sister at RNH Chatham. Beale was the first person serving in the Royal Naval Nursing Service to be appointed DBE, in the 1944 Birthday Honours. She was awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal by the International Committee of the Red Cross for her dedication and contribution to nursing.
