Ethleen was the sister of Paris Singer who served in WWI as a captain of a submarine. During the war the submarine was hit and sinking. A few men were still down in the hold, more had come up to the surface. Pat Singer as captain had to give the command to close the door -- a decision to save most of the crew rather than lose everyone on board when the sub went down. He was awarded a medal by the Crown for his decision but his hair turned white within the following monthPat Singer was my stepgrandfather on my mother's side.
