James Peace Hinchliffe was born 22 Mar 1861 in Denby Dale, Yorkshire, to Zaccheus Hinchliffe and Hannah Horton Peace. He married his cousin Narah Peace Dewhirst 20 Jan 1886. He was active in the family woolen and worsted spinning firm of Zaccheus Hinchliffe and Sons, and was largely responsible for the formation of the British Research Association for Woollen and Worsted Industries. He was knighted in 1920. He died 24 Sep 1933 and is buried in the churchyard of Cumberworth St. Nicholas.
