John Alvin ('Johnny') Ray
(1927-1990), Singer and songwriterSitter in 2 portraits
Born in Dallas, Oregon, Ray grew up on a farm and became deaf in his right ear as a teenager. He took his musical inspiration from jazz, blues and R&B singers to create his own style that is often cited as an important precursor to rock and roll. His first record 'Whisky and Gin'(1951) was followed by hits including 'Cry' and 'The Little White Cloud that Cried' (1952). After a lapse in his career he performed as the opening act on Judy Garland's final tour in 1969 and appeared on a number of American television programmes in the 1970s.
