Richard Garbe was my great uncle. He was one of thirteen, born to German immigrants Karl Gustav and Elisabeth Ida Garbe. His father was an ivory turner and some of his brothers pursued artistic professions such as silver smithing and die sinking. He grew up in Hornchurch Essex. For a while he was a sculptor for Royal Doulton. He married and had one daughter called Elfrieda. He lived at the end of his life in Dorking where he had a studio.
