He was born on 3 November 1871 at Westhill of Airlie in Angus/Forfarshire. He was one of eight children, five boys and 3 girls. The family moved to Wester Jordanstone in Meigle, Perthshire. At the age of 15 he studied to become a vet at the Veterinary School of Glasgow University and qualified at the age of 19. He moved south about 1894 and worked as a vet for London Tramways Company, eventually becoming General Manager of the company. He died at Edmonton on 23 September 1931.
