Born in Scotland, John Allen was a historian and member of the Holland House Set, who served as warden of Dulwich College from 1811-1820, and as master from 1820-1843. He was a contributor of historical and political articles to the Edinburgh Review, Annual Register and Encyclopaedia Britannica ,and was the author of the Inquiry into the Rise and Growth of Royal Prerogative in England (1830).
