Hunt joined the Royal Navy in 1917 and served in the Mediterranean during the Great War. Between the wars he served in the Naval Hospitals in Hong Kong, Plymouth and Chatham, becoming President of the Admiralty Medical Board in London. He commanded the first hospital ship to operate in the Pacific.
