Sitter in 1 portrait
Biochemist. A key figure in the development of antibiotic penicillin, Heatley devised an essential method of purification and a system of producing sufficient quantities for the first clinical trials, whilst working with chemist Ernst Chain in pathologist Howard Florey`s team at the William Dunn School of Pathology in Oxford in 1939. Florey`s success in treating six patients at Oxford`s Radcliffe Infirmary were published in The Lancet in August 1941, whilst Heatley`s contributions were recognised 50 years later when he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Medicine from Oxford University in 1990.
