He was a close friend of Ivor Armstrong Richards whilst at Cambridge. He was with him when he accompanied author Emily Daniell (neé Young) in making the first ascent of the well known rock climb, 'Hope,' in Snowdonia in August 1915.

Sir (Thomas ) James Roxburgh was my much loved paternal grandfather. He went to India in 1913, or thereabouts, aged 21, having been a mathematics scholar at Magdalen College, Cambridge. He took and passed the ICS exam and began his career in the Indian Civil Service up on the North West Frontier as a young magistrate. He rose to the rank of High Court Judge and was the last European judge to leave India after Partition, in 1947. He once fined Ghandi the token sum of one rupee for burning cloth in a public place. Whilst he admired the great man, he knew full well that Ghandi wanted to be put in prison, but my wise grandfather did not want to make a martyr of him! My grandfather taught himself Bengali in order to better understand what was going on around him. He was an excellent judge of character and a wonderful grandfather. His son, my father , Vice Admiral Sir John Roxburgh also had an illustrious career ( in the Royal Navy) for 40 years.
