Adriaen van der Werff

(1659-1722), Painter, draughtsman, mezzotint engraver and architect

Artist associated with 89 portraits
Born in Rotterdam, Van der Werff first studied under Cornelis Pecolet and later under Eglon van der Neer, and established himself at the age of seventeen as a painter of historical subjects. His acquaintance with the art enthusiast Flink gave him the opportunity to work on a fine collection of drawings by the old masters. In 1696 the Elector Palatine, passing through Rotterdam, admired Van der Werff's work and commissioned him to paint a Judgement of Solomon and also his portrait for the Duke of Tuscany. The artist took the completed works to Düsseldorf and enjoyed great success there. The Elector granted him a pension in return for spending six months of the year at his court; he was ennobled in 1703.
