Antonio do Nascimento del Menezes Browne. I am presuming this is the same person (who I was Googling when I found his name on your website) for whom I was looking. He (born 1901) and his brothers Aloysio (aka Aloysius) (birthdate not noted but younger than Antonio and oklder than George) and George (born 1904) were students at Blackrock College in Dublin, Ireland. Their father was George Browne. The family lived in Oporto in Portugal but had to leave in 1910 presumably because of the overthrow of the Portuguese monarchy when the country became a republic and religious orders were expelled, their property confiscated and the teaching of religion in schools and universities was banned. The two eldest Browne boys came to a Catholic boys' school (Blackrock College) in Ireland in 1910, followed two years later by the youngest, George. It would seem that their father left Portugal, from where he had been 'expelled as a Royalist' (quote from Blackrock College records) and emigrated to Brazil.

I was fascinated to note the existence of a portrait of one of these boys. Should you wish to have any further information about them, please contact the undersigned at [email protected]

Should any others make enquiries about the Browne family, you are welcome to give them contact details as above.

Kind regards,

Caroline Mullan
