Meriel was the youngest daughter of Granville Keith Falconer Smith killed WW1 1914,(grandson of 8th Earl of Kintore )by his wife Lady Kathleen daughter of 4th Earl of Leitrim. Through her grandmother Lady Winifred Coke she was descended from Duke of Richmond the natural son of King Charles II.
