Damien Hirst began his career within the publicity hungry art world in 1988 with the organisation of the exhibition Freeze. The exhibition helped launch the career of a number of artists dubbed YBAs (Young British Artists) whose work was subsequently shown in the notorious Sensation exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1998. The now famous motifs of his work range from preserved animals in tanks to spot paintings. Won Turner Prize in 1995 with work including Mother and Child Divided (half a cow and half a calf). Opened Pharmacy restaurant (1998). The 24 rooms of the new Saatchi Gallery (opened April 2003) at County Hall, London include the first Damien Hirst retrospective.
