Henry was part of the early 1980s alternative comedy scene. Talent-spotted on the New Faces television show when he was sixteen, his career took off with the television series Three of a Kind. From 1984 he had his own series on BBC that returned to the screen in 2004. Other television shows include Chef (1993-6). In addition to frequent appearances on television, radio and in film, Lenny Henry has toured as a stand-up, and was one of the co-founders of Comic Relief in 1985. In 2009 he appeared in the title role of a stage production of Shakespeare's tragedy Othello in Leeds and London, and in 2011 made his National Theatre debut in The Comedy of Errors.
