A fashion graduate from the Royal College of Arts, Hamlyn began working as head designer for Cresta Silks and Debenhams. For her fiftieth birthday her late husband, publisher Paul Hamlyn, created The Helen Hamlyn Trust. Through this she has promoted better design for older people with the New Design For Old exhibition at the V&A Boilerhouse (1986) and the DesignAge programme (1991). She sponsored an annual event (1986-98) subsidising tickets to performances at the Royal Opera House. The Helen Hamlyn Trust, which has endowed the RCA Helen Hamlyn Centre, continues to support a wide range of medical, arts and culture, education, welfare and humanitarian projects.
