After the War Office rejected her offer to volunteer, Sandes travelled to Serbia with a Red Cross unit and worked in a hospital until the Serbian army was forced to retreat in October 1915. As hospital work was no longer viable, Sandes enlisted in the army. Fighting alongside the men she assisted with the retreat of hundreds of thousands of civilians and was wounded twice. In recognition of her bravery she was awarded Serbia's highest medal for non-commissioned officers. She was demobilised in 1922, with the rank of sergeant and the accolade of being the only British woman to officially serve as a soldier in the war.
